Tom Sach x Nike Mars Yard 2.0

Sachs’s interest in space exploration became apparent with his ‘Space Program’ collections created in the early 2000s. The pinnacle of this particular line of work was a 1:1 model of the Apollo Lunar Module, a mission control with twenty-nine close circuit monitors and outfitted with two female astronauts with handmade Tyvek spacesuits. In October 2007 at the Gagosian Gallery he actually launched, landed and explored the surface of the moon with his spacecraft. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This deep fascination served as the stimuli for the collab. Partnering with Nasa’s highly specialised scientists he hoped his shoes would harbour the same functionality as his other space inspired works. His version one seemed set for release but failed after strenuous testing over time with Sachs himself stating “It passed the abrasion test. It passed the strength test. It passed the folding test. It passed all the tests, but when we started using it, it didn’t meet our expectations.” So after having spent 5 years testing the shoe with daily wear, the ‘Nikecraft Mars Yard 2.0’ was born, a rendition that had the practical properties that Sachs sought after. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The collaboration is highly sought after with pairs of the 2.0 fetching upwards of $3000 on the resale market and Sachs himself proclaiming it as the best #Nike collab of all time, and although a very bold and outlandish statement there is evidence that points to its success. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #FrankOcean, co-signed the collab by appearing in the campaign directed my Sachs himself. Nike have also rereleased the shoe in toddler and child sizes, created an SB rendition of the silhouette as well as hinting to other iterations in a black and white colourway in addition to a potential midsole variation. Such commercial backing from a huge transnational corporation such as Nike serves to ultimately suggest the shoe is admired on a wide scale and really is selling. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ An interesting part of the collab is the Overshoe. Eleven years in the making and an entirely unique silhouette that resembles a moonboot, the overshoe provides something for the tastes of the more niche high-end markets
